Meravigliosa !!!!

    One of the evergreats and surely one of the most underrated of all sopranos. She is a superstar! If she had recorded more she would be a household name. But we are lucky to listen to the few clips that exist. A voice like this is not found anywhere in the World today, sadly…..and not just the voice - her wonderful interpretations, one of the greatest Leonoras and Aidas......

      There's many pirated operas with her. The record companies didn't want her or with Tebaldi, Callas, Sutherland and Zeani singing then.... even Zeani doesn't have much out there as far as studio recordings. Nor does Elinor Ross or Marisa Galvany who would have been fantastic in this opera as clips of their Norma bare out

    Leyla Gencer has a different way to get me to still love Pirata's finale. Bless her, tough gal like a pirate and they called her the Queen of the Pirates at one time. She is touching, moving, and thank you for letting me get past col sorriso-- bellini's gem of cantabile with so striking an ending; the floor is strong.

    I heard Gencer in her prime [1965 at the Rome Opera in Gluck's Alceste] and she was absolute perfection. She understood the Gluck compositional demands and the need to bring the dramatic struggle of the soprano to the forefront. It was one of the performances that after more than 50 years of attending opera on four continents I still hold in very high esteem.

      Αllan Rizzetti a couple of days ago, spoils us with this incomparable Alceste.A very unique performance.
      Not only Leyla is in her best period ,buf also the magic genius of Gui ,who was one of the very few, to feel the style & the tempi of neoclassical operas.
      He repeats the miracle he did with Callas Medea '53.

    She was a similar soprano to Caballe and Callas. This mad scene literally takes the soprano and stretches their ability to the limits. Bellini wrote this to demonstrate extreme pathos while exhibiting coloratura and beautiful pianissimo notes. Gencer is amazing!!

    • @fabriziogarzi9892
      @fabriziogarzi9892 Месяц назад

      Leyla e' stata una grande cantante ed una grande artista. Con la Caballe' non aveva nulla in comune e ancor meno con la Callas. Ma e' stata una artista di riferimento ed artisticamente era piuttosto autonoma pur avendo agito nel solco lasciato dalla Maria. Oggi non esiste un soprano che la possa sostituire in qualche maniera.

      Frankly singer's in the past were often colleagues and not rivals. Giullitta Simionato spoke of discussing support issues with Maria because she was asked by Callas to help her understand register issues. When Simionato pointed to the early demands on a teenaged body to sing adult repertoire and the strain to her muscular development that had to be addressed, it was welcome advice from a friend. This was in a printed interview I read personally, not anecdotal.

    • @wilsonwatt9283
      @wilsonwatt9283 5 лет назад +3

      Absolutely. In any concert performance you can see Callas becoming the character during the introduction so that when she looks up for the first sung note she is no longer Calls but the character she is performing. I use the word performing because even in a concert venue Callas is never just singing.

    • @esrari
      @esrari 4 года назад +8

      this is not a theatre stage. on theatrical stage leyla gencer is also legend like maria callas. here she is on a broadcast of turkish state television. still you can "see" the acting in her voice. she never solely sings the notes. the drama is always there and intense. both are legends. why this stupid comparison? callas herself always appreciated gencer.

  • @christophecesar4761

    Leyla Gencer was a great artist and a unique soprano which pay justice to Donizetti, Bellini and the young Verdi. But it's a pity she sang this in 1974 and not 10 years before... To say the less.
    PS : for whom wouldn't understand, it's much better than almost all the soprano who sang this the past 20 years (at least), but not the best we can heard from her and from this scene. To say also the least.

    Uhm… un paio di commenti questo video li merita. Il primo sulla direzione orchestrale, davvero brutta, soprattutto nel finale, dove la corsa avvolge gli strumenti in una sorta di corsa da banda di paese.
    Stupisce francamente Leyla, che considero una brava cantante, non solo per la bella voce (oltre a essere stata una bella donna e con bella presenza scenica) ma anche e soprattutto per le sue capacità interpretative: penso ad esempio a una sua stupenda Aida, o a La forza del destino, ppure Nabucco, dove il "sacro fuoco" della recitazione è sempre emerso e con forza. Qui in questo video, nel pieno della sua maturità artistica (aveva 46 anni), appare stranamente affaticata, slegata, il registro basso è bello limpido eppure si scolla dal resto. Molti respiri, pochi legati… strano per una artista del suo calibro. E quell'acuto finale a piena rincorsa non è proprio bello. Forse non era in forma quella sera, chissà...

    Leyla Gencer a une technique qu'on apprécie ou pas, mais je la trouve ici surtout extérieure au drame, et peut-être n'a-t-elle pas tout simplement la voix d'Imogena, manque de grave, et un technique un peu déficiente en agilité. Quant à l'orchestre et la direction c'est presque du niveau d' amateurisme.

      David Rosales Me parece un comentario injusto. En este vídeo La Gencer no estaba en lo más alto de su carrera ( tampoco lo estaba Callas con la misma edad, cabe decirlo), pero creo que, aún entendiendo que Callas fue única, no andaban taaaaan lejos en óperas como Vespri, Don Carlo, Macbeth, Trovatore, Bolena, Ballo in Maschera, Forza, Aida... ambas eran artistas muy temperamentales con un especial talento para abordar emociones como la ira, la maldad o la agresividad. ¿Si la Gencer no puede compararse con la Callas, quién puede entonces?

    • @davidrosague
      @davidrosague 7 лет назад +3

      Leilog respeto su postura... Aún poseyendo particularidades que la hicieron única... me resultó pedante y despótico de su parte compararse con Maria Callas.
      Por último... Maria Callas no necesita ser defendida ya que le avalan un sin fin de producciónes, grabaciones y contratos que habla por si sólos.
      Callas fue leyenda, y es parte de una historia que ha merecido ser contada. Sin mencionar y meternos de lleno a sus cualidades técnicas... que sin lugar a dudas fueron extraordinarias. No tengo la misma estima por la soprano Leyla... que básicamente no despierta nada de mi interés.
